1861 - 1911
Alice was born October 13, 1861, in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, the daughter of Truman Osborn Angell and Susan Eliza Savage Angell, the sister of three siblings and at least nine half-siblings. The family resided in Salt Lake City according to the 1870 and 1880 US Census. She resided at Utah State Hospital for at least a decade as reflected in the 1900 and 1910 US Census. Alice Cates Angell passed from this life January 30, 1911, at Utah State Hospital in Provo, Utah. She was 49.
USH Record and DC Info Prior to Research: Alice was believed to be about 50 years old when she passed from this life at Utah State Hospital. Her death certificate states she was a former resident of Salt Lake City, Utah, single, family unknown, and a patient about two years [revised].
Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Cemetery Project: Alice was among 600+ patients of the Utah Territorial Insane Asylum (now known as Utah State Hospital) between 1886 and 1960, buried in the Provo City Cemetery, most in unmarked graves, given a pauper's burial, alone without recognition or ceremony. The Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Cemetery Project requested donations to create a monument with individual plaques to honor each of these precious spirits. Thankfully, it was completed and dedicated to them October 10, 2018, in Provo City Cemetery.
