Cartoonist, painter, visionary, and co-creator of Quarry Hill Community/ Creative Center in Rochester, VT, Barbara was born to a proud Southern family in Tucson. She rebelled against her upbringing and went to New York to be a Bohemian painter. She got a job drawing Girl Commandoes and The Blonde Bomber (possibly The Black Cat) for Harvey Comics during World War II. When she and Irving Fiske became a couple (around 1943) she decided to give up comics to paint and teach. They married in 1946 and bought land in Rochester, VT which they turned into an artist's retreat. In the 1960s it became filled with many young people who asked to live and have children on the land. In the late 1990s QH was the largest "commune" in VT. It is presently (2017) the oldest. Barbara and Irving divorced in 1976 after having 2 children, Isabella (Ladybelle) and William. Barbara remarried Dr. Donald W. Calhoun on April 9, 1989 in Miami, Fl. She joined the Quakers in the 1980s. Dr. Calhoun was also a Friend. He died May 5, 2009.
