Daughter of a well traveled, raconteur father, who made his living as a mining engineer and brokering deals for rare gems and minerals, and a bon vivant artist mother, Joan Gordon Baragwanath grew up in New York artistic high society.

Her parents knew them all: William Paley, Irving Berlin, Ernest Hemingway, Charles Chaplin, an endless list of artistic geniuses and who's who of the Roaring Twenties and beyond.

Joan went to Wellesley and during World War II she met her future husband, Frederic Leech. He was from an old established Wisconsin family. The Leech newlyweds engaged in philanthropy, supporting the arts, and charities.

Joan had an artistic side and expressed it by developing flowers in her garden, designing needlepoint patterns, painting, and more. She was a docent for a museum, and encouraged local artists.

Joan also enjoyed sport activities, including tennis and sailing.

Mr. and Mrs. Leech were active with Bergstrom-Mahler museum and the Visiting Nurse society among other charitable endeavors. Joan's father's gem stone collection was donated to Lawrence University, her husband's alma mater.

Frederic Leech predeceased his wife. Mrs. Leech was survived by a half brother, Albert Kingsmill "King" Baragwanath, from her father's first marriage (to Leila Morris); also by her caregiver; and a beloved canine companion, Marley.
