Delva D. GESS (11/16/1921 - 07/04/2016)

Delva was born in the beautiful Chewelah Valley on November16, 1921, the daughter of Nick and Veronica Delva. She grew up with three sisters and one brother. She has now gone to be with them. Delva passed from this life on July 4, 2016, peacefully in her sleep. She attended St. Mary's in Chewelah and Catholic High School in Coeur d' Alene, ID.
After her schooling, she moved to Seattle where she worked as a secretary in the medical field. And she danced, she danced with the USO and she loved it. After WWII she moved to the Tri-Cities and worked as a medical secretary for the rest of her career. There she continued with her love of dancing by taking dance lessons of every kind and helping teach dance with her friend.
Delva married her skiing partner, Bob Gess on December 17, 1949. Bob preceded her in death on March 20, 2005. Since they had no children, they poured their love and spare time into helping raise their nieces and nephews. Together they bought them skis, boots and lift tickets in the winter. In summer, trips to lakes and the ocean. They were fun. We would wait for them to show up on the weekends, always looking up the lane to see if their car was coming. Their affection helped build the Baker family.
After retiring, they moved to Chelan which was close to their favorite skiing at Mission Ridge. They would ski there almost every day. Delva moved back to Chewelah after Bob's passing and built a home at the Chewelah Golf Couse, and continued her passion for skiing. She skied up to the age of 87, when a fall on the ski hill and a broken leg stopped her. Time to give up the sport she loved. No longer able to ski, she called herself a "City Girl" and moved to Spokane. She liked living in the city, she liked shopping, loved having lunch out with her friends and art galleries.
Delva was an avid knitter. She made many beautiful sweaters over the years. When they were on the road, if Bob was driving, she would be knitting slippers. Many people were gifted with "Delva slippers" and always felt special to receive them.
She was truly a unique person. She was very beautiful and always took pride in looking her best. She had style. We were always proud to be with her, to call her aunt, to call her friend. Delva made friends wherever she went, was loved by many and she will be missed. She already is.
A service will be held Friday, July 15, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Chewelah Memorial Cemetery. She is now back in the beautiful Chewelah Valley she grew up in. After the service, a celebration of life will be held at Barbara and Bill Baker's home.
Delva was a cat rescuer, a stray cat never crossed her path that she didn't feed, take to the vet and find it a home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local Humane Society.
