Vernal moved into his brother Henry's home in Marion, AL, along with his mother and siblings Margaret and Antoinette, after the death of his father.
Vernal and his wife Mary later moved to the Blesdoe Plantation at Grand Cane, TX, around 1840, which was a gathering place for the family. The couple traveled to Houston in January 1841 after the miscarriage of their child, and soon after became the trustees of Virginia Thorne, a 7-year-old orphan from Galveston. Virginia soon came under Nancy's care. Mary died on November 1, 1845, and shortly after, Virginia began being cared for by Margaret Houston.
Vernal remarried to Catherine Davis in 1849. He passed away in 1852 and was buried at the family homesite on Council Hill, at the Lea Family Cemetery.
