US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Corporal Callahan enlisted into the US Army on November 5, 1872, at Boston, MA. He was described as 5'7", grey eyes, dark hair, with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was currier. On December 9, 1872, Callahan reported for duty at Yorkville, SC. He was assigned to Company K, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. In August of 1873, Callahan was part of the Yellowstone Expedition. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Callahan had the misfortune of being the only member from Company K to be attached LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Callahan, on that day, was an acting hospital steward for Dr. George Lord. Both Dr. Lord and Callahan were killed sometime during the fighting. Callahan's remains were reportedly found on Last Stand Hill. It is likely that he was first buried where he had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were reburied in a mass grave on Last Stand Hill. On February 7, 1891, his father was awarded a survivor's pension.
