Alma "Rex" Dunford was born the third child of Alma Teller Dunford and Thelma Evelyn Tueller Dunford on 11 June 1924 in Provo, Utah. He had seven siblings; five brothers and three sisters.

He attended a year of college before entering the military in February 1943, eventually becoming Sergeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart on 18 May 1945. About a month later, on 22 June 1945, he was wounded by a land mine explosion causing a head injury in Okinawa, Japan. In 1946, he went back to school at Brigham Young University.

He married Beverly Duckett on 4 June 1947 in Salt Lake City. She was born 30 September 1927, also in Provo to Edward James Duckett and Jessie Souter Duckett. Rex and Beverly were the proud parents of seven children. Beverly was an accomplished violinist, a piano teacher for many years and helped found and manage the Utah Valley Symphony for over 40 years. She preceded him in death on 31 March 2004.

Rex was manager of Jack Duckett Appliance in Provo for many years, an outstanding Boy Scout Leader, very active and held many leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Rex passed away in Spanish Fork, Utah on his eternal companion's birthday in 2006. They are both buried at East Lawn Memorial Hills in Provo, Utah.
