HERMAN BERGNER

Herman Bergner, 94, former Cleveland resident, died Wednesday at Family Heritage Home, Manitowoc, after a lingering illness.Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John and St. Peter Lutheran Church, Cleveland. The Rev. Paul W. Knickelbein will officiate and burial will be in St. Johannes Cemetery, Cleveland.

Mr. Bergner was born in Berka, Saxon-Weimer, Germany, Feb. 22, 1873, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bergner, and came to America when he was 12 years of age. He was educated in Sheboygan County and then joined two of his brothers, Paul and Carl, who were already settled there and learned the harness making trade. He married Emma Roehl Oct. 16, 1893, in Sheboygan County and the couple moved to Newton where he was a harness maker for about four years before he began farming in the Town of Centerville. In 1917, he left the farm, moved to Cleveland and went into harness-making again. He was township assessor for 12 years, member of the school board and a volunteer fireman. He also worked for Cleveland Canning Co. and the Polarware firm at Sheboygan, retiring when he was 81 years of age. His wife died in December, 1957.

Survivors are three sons, Reuben, of Manitowoc, Elmer, former Manitowoc County sheriff, and Edward, of Cleveland; six daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Norma) Kolb, of Cleveland, Mrs. George (Meta) Simmet, of Manitowoc, Mrs. Orville (Florence) Grotegut, of Mailwaukee, and Mrs. John (Ellen) Schaefer, Mrs. Harvey (Stella) Schuette and Mrs. Fred (Dorothy) Meyer, of Sheboygan; 20 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Two sisters, three brothers, three grandchildren and a great grandchild preceded him in death.

Friends may call at Leschke-Bergner Funeral Home, Manitowoc, after 3 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday when the casket will be moved to church where the body will lie in state until time of service.
