On Saturday, June 6, 2015, Francis Michael O'Leary passed on to eternal life. The son of Adelaide Catherine Egner O'Leary and Dennis Dominus O'Leary, Frank was born on January 8, 1921, in Catonsville, Maryland.

Frank had five older step-siblings, one half-sister Gertrude (Monaco), and five younger siblings: Mary (Fuller) who survives him, Dennis, Roz (Carroll), Gerry (Thompson), and Ann (Hoffman). In his later years, Dad noted on so many occasions his amazement about how his mother was able to raise all of these children.

Frank was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 68 years, Jane; two grandchildren (Kevin and Christine O'Leary); his parents, and all of his siblings except Mary who resides in Florida.

He leaves to cherish his memory all of his children, Kathleen and Chuck (Graf) of Towson, Md.; Michael O'Leary of Catonsville, Md.; Dennis and Leslie O'Leary and Mary O'Leary of Charlottesville, Va.; and Margaret and Mike (Maupin) of Free Union, Va. In addition, nine grandchildren will fondly cherish their memories of Grandpa, Jennifer, Michael, Christopher and Matthew; Megan, Meredith, and Dennis II; and Raleigh and Brennan. His great-grandchildren (Carlyn, Jack, Ansley, Owen, Cullen and Gabby) and his nieces and nephews are also lucky enough to have treasured memories.

Frank's life was one of service--service to God, to his parents and siblings, to his family, to his church, and to those in need. To his dying day he was always looking out for others. With an unwavering faith in God, he served in the Knights of Columbus, was a lector, and a Eucharistic minister. He was a member of Incarnation, previously known as Holy Comforter - Branchlands, for the last 44 years.

Frank graduated from Loyola College in 1943, attended medical school for a year, then enlisted in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician in World War II. He met and married Mary Jane McCaffrey, then served in the South Pacific on Tinian Island, from where the planes launched that carried the atom bombs that ended the war.Frank started work for the federal government in 1947, working at Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD. A move to Charlottesville began his career as an Intelligence Specialist at Foreign Science and Technology Center in 1971. He retired with over 38 years of service in 1981.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Church of the Incarnation and the family will receive friends at the church at 6 p.m. Interment with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at St. George Catholic Cemetery in Scottsville, Va. Father Gerald Fogarty will officiate at both the church and the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911 or to Church of the Incarnation, 1465 Incarnation Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

The O'Leary family thanks everyone for their prayers, visits and calls in the last years, in particular Harry Gephart and Peggy Rush for their visits bringing him communion, Andy Macfarlan and his staff for their compassion and medical care, the staff and volunteers at Hospice of the Piedmont and Hospice House, and caregivers Keke Anderson and Laura Booker for their friendship and care over the last 2 1/2 years. One more member of the Greatest Generation, our Dad, rests in sweet peace with our Lord and Savior.Friends may send condolences to his family at www.hillandwood.com.
