Funeral services have been set for Victoria "Tori" Campbell, the Orem teen who died at her home Sunday from metachromatic leukodystrophy, or MLD.
Tori and two of her four siblings were diagnosed with the disease in November 2012. In early 2013, Tori, her sister Maddie and brother Ike spent weeks in Primary Children's Medical Center recovering from bone marrow transplants and drastic chemotherapy in hopes the procedures would slow or stop the progress of the deadly disease. While the treatments seem to have been beneficial for Tori's siblings, her MLD had progressed too far.
The Daily Herald has been following the family's rare and amazing story during the past two years.
MLD affects the protective covering around nerve cells (myelin sheath), as well as the nerve fibers that the sheath insulates and protects. MLD has no cure. Tori has donated brain tissue to help doctors and scientists in their research for a cure.
Funeral services for Tori will be held at noon Saturday at the Mountain View High School auditorium, 665 W. Center St. in Orem. There will be a viewing from 9:30 a.m. to noon, also in the high school auditorium. The family is planning an additional viewing from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 S. State, Orem.
