Mary married John Peale Bent on May 25, 1935 in the home of her parents in Lake Forest, IL. She was the granddaughter of John Graves Shedd, who became the president of Marshall Field & Company department store upon the death of it's founder, Marshall Field, and he contributed extensively to Chicago charities, universities and museums, and in the early 1920s he provided $3 million to build Chicago's Shedd Aquarium. Mary served as a governing member of the Shedd Aquarium, was a former president of the Visiting Nurse Association, and a former member of the Chicago Horticultural Society. Mary was a lifelong resident of Lake Forest, IL.
