Horace Crookham AYRES (later Sr.), son of Orlando Buenos AYRES, Jr. and Helen Elizabeth CROOKHAM; born 07 February 1909, Carlisle, Polk Co., Iowa (obit); died age 66 in 1975; buried (cemetery & place unknown).

Horace Crookham Ayres, (later Sr.) married 18 April 1930, Seattle, King Co., WA to Clara May TURNER, daughter of Edwin G. TURNER and (Unknown) ARCHER; born 28 June 1907, Manila, Mindoro Oriental Co., Philippines.

Horace Crookham Ayres, Sr. and Clara May TURNER had three known children:

Leaving for a new home in Sequim, Wash., are Prof. and Mrs. Horace C. Ayres, who have been residents of the Monterey Peninsula for the past 10 years.
Prof. Ayres is retiring after 45 years in the Navy and 10 years with the mathematics department of the Naval Post-graduate School. During their years on the Peninsula, Mrs. Ayres has done teaching and nursing and was 1968 president of the Monterey Toastmistress Club.
When Prof. and Mrs. Ayres settle in Washington they will be living not far from Bremerton, home of their daughter, Betty (Mrs. W.[..] G. Clarke), a former physicist with Boeing and now the mother of five children. Another daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. T[..] Hesse) lives here on the Peninsula and is a mathematician connected with Fleet Numerical Weather Central. The Ayres’ son, Horace Jr., is a reporter on the Baltimore Evening Sun.
A farewell luncheon for Mrs. Ayres was given in the Galleon room at the Naval Postgraduate School by a group of mathematics department wives, including Mrs. Robert E. Gaskell, wife of Prof. Gaskell, department chairman; and Mmes. W. E. Bleick, R. C. Campbell, F. L. Daniels, F. D. Faulkner, Joseph Giarratana, Walter Jennings, Uno R. Kodres, E. S. Langford, K. R. Lucas, H. B. Marks, G. H. Spalding, E. J. Stewart and D. H. Trahan. Special guests were Mrs. Ayres’ daughters, Mrs. Hesse, and two long-time friends, Mrs. Henry T. Kohler, wife of Prof. Kohler of the department of aeronautics, and Mrs. A. E. Vivell, wife of Prof. Vivell of the electrical engineering department."

“HORACE C. AYRES
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church for Horace C. Ayres, 66, a retired Naval Reserve captain and professor of mathematics from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
Capt. Ayres, died of a heart attack Saturday in Carlsbad, where he and his wife Clara May had been living in retirement since September 1973.
Ayres, born in Carlisle, Iowa, was attending high school in Seattle, Wash. And working as a longshoreman when he first enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1924.
In 1958 he joined the civilian faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., as a professor of mathematics, remaining there for 10 years until his retirement in 1968.
In addition to his widow, Professor Ayres is survived by his son, Horace G. [C.] Ayres, Jr. [1931-1981], of Baltimore, Md., two daughters, Mrs. Betty May Clarke of Bremerton, Wash., and Mrs. Evelyn Hesse of Monterey, Calif., five grandchildren, a brother, Osborne Ayres [1902-1978] of Seattle, and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Daily [1898-1980] of Eugene, Ore., and Mrs. Esther Timmons [1900-1987], Sunnyvale, Calif.”
