"French and German" people descend from ancient Alpine-Celtic and Germanic populations, and inhabit an area extending from the Netherlands to Austria – roughly corresponding to the extent of Charlemagne's Frankish Kingdom in the Middle Ages. Estimates place Charlemagne himself in the family trees of all modern Europeans, possibly many times over. Genetically and geographically, the French and Germans are at the heart of Europe.

A - Baden-Württemberg is a state in southwest Germany bordering France and Switzerland. The Black Forest, known for its evergreen scenery and traditional villages, lies in the mountainous southwest. The 19th-century Hohenzollern Castle sits in the Swabian Alps to the south.
B - Hamburg a major port city in northern Germany, is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River. It's crossed by hundreds of canals, and also contains large areas of parkland.
C - North Rhine-Westphalia is a western German state. The city of Cologne's twin-spired Cathedral is a Gothic landmark with views of the Rhine River. The adjacent Museum Ludwig showcases 20th-century art. The state capital, Düsseldorf, is known for its elegant shopping boulevard Königsallee and the soaring, modern Rheinturm tower. Outside the city, Schloss Benrath is an 18th-century palace with gardens and a museum.

Most immigrants arrived with a European accent. Most of the immigrant clerks that processed them would register their name as what they heard. (As best as they could spell it). There was some lack of communication between the clerk and the ancestor.
This is how Monigold (maybe) wandered around MANGOLD and MANSELL and MENZEL -- (maybe).

NOTE: Byron Monigold, is said to have told his kids that the family's real name was MacMonigold or NacMonigold, he wasn't sure. (per. Barbara Monigold, his grand-daughter)
