Graveside services will be held for Charles James Howard, 84, of Chico 10:00 a.m. Monday April 11th at Chico Cemetery. He died Thursday April 7, 2005 at his home.


Charlie was born June 29, 1920 in Ajo, Ariz. to Alpha and Charles Howard. He attended schools in Chico, and on June 12, 1942 he married Colleen Quilter.


During World War II he served in the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division where he received the Bronze Star for his participation in the Leyte Island Philippines invasion. Charlie worked for the U.S. Postal Service, the Milkaway Dairy and later for the Butte County Sheriff's Office. He was a member of Chico-Leland Stanford Masonic Lodge #111, Chico Elks Lodge #423, and served as an Enloe Hospice volunteer.


Survivors include his daughter and husband Gala and Greg Ybanez of Durham; a son, Jim and wife, Trudie of Stockton; three brothers, John Bay of Chico, Jim Bay of Fountain Valley and Eric Bay of Georgia; a sister, Kristine Layman of Ore.; three grandchildren, Julie, Jeff and Carmen; a great-grandson, Cody.


Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. Charlie will be buried next to his wife, Colleen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ostomy Association of Greater Chico in care of the funeral home, and condolences may be sent online at nbcfh.com.
