Enlisted as a private the summer of 1775 in Essex Co., NJ. Volunteered for various periods totaling 18 months under Capts Baker and Brown and Cols Heard and Luse. Pension granted 4 Mar 1831 at rate of $60 per annum and certificate No 2361 issued 1 Nov 1832 at Hamilton, OH. Daniel signed his pension acceptance statement with an "X" meaning that he couldn't read or write. The statement on the pension application indicates birth date and place and states -- he moved to Warren Co. OH in 1809 where he lived 22 years and then 1 year in Butler Co., OH. Occupation: Cabinetmaker; Daniel was totally blind at death.

He married Phebe Butler (b. 23 Jul 1756, d. 31 Jul 1832). They had 7 children: Sarah Gray (b. 1778), Louis Gray (1780), Susannah Gray (1781), Amos Gray (1787), Catherine Gray (1791), Lemuel Gray (1794), and Phebe Gray (1795). Amos Gray married Sophia Christman; one of their children, Daniel B. Gray, married Elizabeth Wilson; one of their children, John Amos Gray, married Mary A. Coffee; one of their children, Hazel Fern Gray, married Olva Raymond Odum (Sr.). The family's migration was New Jersey to Ohio, to Indiana, to Illinois (near St. Louis).
