Leroy Calvin Darling Chilton Times December 4, 1875
Died – At Atoka, Choctow Nation, Indian Territory, Nov. 19th, 1875, of typhoid fever, L. C. Darling, aged 36 years and ten months. A kind, faithful husband, a loving dutiful son, an estimable citizen and a genial whole souled companion has gone down into and through the dreary valley over into the regions of the unknown.
Leroy Calvin Darling was born in Lincoln, Chenango County, N.Y. Jan. 16th, 1839. Came to Wisconsin with his parents in 1855, and settled at Gravesville in this county in 1857. He enlisted with Sergeant Hulburt of Co. K, 4th Wis. Cavalry and served as private until the Regiment was mustered out of the service in 1866. Went with the regiment in its famous march from the Mississippi across Louisiana and Texas to the Rio Grande in 1865. And during his sojourn in Texas became so well pleased with its climate and future prospects that he determined at a fitting time to return and carve himself a home among its hospitable people. Accordingly, in the spring of 1874 he, with others from his county made a venture and struck Texas just as she was beginning to feel the effects of the panic of 1873. Not finding matters just as expected he came North to the little village of Atoka in the Choctow Nation where he died. Mr. Darling was a very skillful and ingenious mechanic both as a millwright and carpenter and joiner and made hosts of friends wherever he went.
A wife mourns the loss of a husband, an aged mother her lost and only remaining son, a sister and only brother, and an entire community a much respected friend.
