G. A. GROTEGUT DIES; MILITARY RITES PLANNED
Cleveland Cattle Buyer Was Operated On At Veterans Hospital, Milwaukee
Gardner A. Grotegut, 37, World war veteran, deputy sheriff, former ball
player and manager and for the past few years engaged as a horse and
cattle buyer at Cleveland, this county, died Tuesday at Milwaukee.
Removed to the Milwaukee Veterans hospital two weeks ago Mr. Grotegut
did not contemplate an operation. While there he suffered an attack of
gall stones and an operation was decided on Monday. He was placed under
an oxygen tent and was given a blood transfusion in an effort to save
his life but he died last night.
A military funeral will be given the deceased in charge of the Drews post
of the American Legion of this city, of which he was a member. Services
will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. from the Grotegut home in the village of
Cleveland.
The deceased was born in Cleveland March 4, 1897, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Grotegut, and always resided in the town of Centerville. In early
life he took to athletics. He played baseball and basketball and managed
teams in and about Centerville.
Saw Service
He saw service in the World war being a member of Company F, of the Sixth
United States infantry. Shortly before his unit went overseas Mr. Grotegut
was forced to undergo medical treatment which prevented his continuing on
the active list and he ________ France.
Mr. Grotegut engaged in the business of buying and selling horses and cattle
which he continued to follow up to the time of his fatal illness.
The elder Grotegut served as a deputy sheriff for years and Gardner Grotegut
was also commissioned as a deputy and served on the staffs of several sheriffs.
He was a member of Sheriff Herman Schuette's force at the time of his death.
The deceased was married to Miss Mabel Comins of Elkhart Lake March 31, 1934
and they took up their home in Cleveland with Mrs. Amelia Grotegut, mother of
the deceased. Survivors are his widow, mother, and brother Orville of Milwaukee,
William Grotegut, the father, died in 1932.
The body is to be ________to Cleveland Thursday at 7 a.m. from Milwaukee and
will be removed to the family home in the village where it may be viewed up
to the hour of the funeral Friday afternoon.

Military Funeral Is Given Gardner Grotegut
A military funeral was accorded Gardner A. Grotegut, Cleveland, Friday afternoon
under the charge of the Drews post of the American Legion of this city, to which the
deceased belonged. The caisoon, drawn by four horses, conveyed the body from the
Grotegut home and the church to the cemetery. A color guard, firing squad and 40
members of the post attended.
The Rev. Otto Menke delivered the funeral sermon at the Reformed church at
Centerville. L. Strattman, K. Olmsted, R. Jost, Z. Williams, H. Vadoske, and A.
Schaetzer officiated as pallbearers.
