Comic Artist. She received notoriety as an American illustrator, specializing in comics. She was often referred to as the "Queen of Comics" during her nearly four-decade career working with New York newspapers and magazines. She was the creator of the Brinkley Girl, a stylish character, who appeared in her comics and became a popular symbol in songs, films and theater. In 2020, The San Diego Comic Con inducted Nell Brinkley into the Eisner Award Hall of Fame. Though she was never formally trained in art, she had a natural talent with ink and pen. At the age of 16, she illustrated the book cover with 25 illustrations for A. U. Mayfield's 1906 children's book, "Wally Wish and Maggie Magpie." Recognizing her talent, William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper publisher, hired her for daily illustrations. She married once, divorced and had a son.
