In 2020, The San Diego Comic Con inducted Nell Brinkley into the Eisner Award Hall of Fame. Though she was never formally trained in art, she had a natural talent with ink and pen. At the age of 16, she illustrated the book cover with 25 illustrations for A. U. Mayfield's 1906 children's book, "Wally Wish and Maggie Magpie." Recognizing her talent, William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper publisher, hired her for daily illustrations. She married once, divorced and had a son.
