Jim was born February 13, 1928 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin to James M. and Alvina M. (Grovogel) Johnson. He served honorably in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant from 1946 until 1949. After his military service, he worked as a mechanical engineer for many firms across the Midwest. He began working at Harnischfeger Corp. in 1969, and continued his career there until his retirement in the early 1990s.

On May 6, 1978, Jim was united in marriage to Emma Arlene Freeman-Anderson in Cedar Rapids. He enjoyed playing bridge and bowling; he had been a devoted member of the Tuesday bridge club at Four Oaks and the Friday morning bowling group at the Westside Bowl. He also enjoyed golfing and dining out.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Arlene in 2013, two sisters, and one brother.
