She had been hospitalized four weeks with a lingering illness. For the past two years she made her home in Sheboygan with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Tompkins, 820 N. 6th St.
The former Anna Bauman, she was born at Branch, Manitowoc County, Jan.24, 1873, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Bauman. On July 13, 1892, she was married to Mr. Schmatz at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whitelaw.
Following marriage the couple operated the Schmatz homestead farm west of Branch until retiring and moving to the nearby Village of Whitelaw. Upon her husband's death in 1929 Mrs. Schmatz returned to live with her sons on the farm, remaining there until coming to Sheboygan.
She was a member of St. Michael's Parish and of its Christian Mothers Society for 65 years.
Surviving are five sons, Joseph, R.1, Manitowoc, Clarence and Frank,Manitowoc, Raymond on the home farm, and Harry, New York City; three daughters, Mrs. Tompkins (Cecelia), Mrs. Rudolph Gilbertson (Mary), also of Sheboygan, and Mrs. Clarence Wittak (Hilda), Manitowoc; 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Frank Bauman, Manitowoc; and three sisters, Sister Mary Sophia, Holy Family Convent, Silver Lake, Mrs. Verona Wagner, Marshfield, and Mrs. Frances Krippner, Manitowoc.
She was preceded in death by three sons, one brother and one sister.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Church, Whitelaw, with Father Radey, pastor, celebrant of the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call at the Mittnacht Funeral Home in Manitowoc this evening. The rosary will be recited there.
