"The LaFayette Sun" - December 21, 1922:

Dudleyville - The death of H. V. Yancey, near our town on December 1, was very sad. He was only sick a short time and his death came as a great surprise to his many friends. He was a good man. The church and community realize that they have lost one of their best citizens. He was always ready to do what he could to help others. The writer had known him for several years, and never knew anything but good of him. We can truthfully say, "A good man has gone to reap the reward of the faithful." He was buried at Harmony Church in the afternoon of December 2.

AND...in the same issue:

Herschel V. Yancey.

The subject of this sketch, Brother H. V. Yancey, was born December 26, 1858, and lived in Chambers County, Ala. He was married December 30, 1879, to Miss Ida M. Owsley. To this union were born seven children, one son dying in infancy, the other six are all living and married. They are as follows: H. Foster, J. Houston, William L. and Clarence E., sons; and Mrs. Oma Finley and Mrs. Willie Rearden, daughters. There are twenty-one grandchildren to whom the writer extends heartfelt sympathy.
Brother Yancey departed this life on the first day of December 1922. Though to all outward appearances a healthy man, he was a victim of high blood pressure and digestive disorders. While thus afflicted he was not morose or complaining on the contrary he was optimistic of a bright and sunny disposition. A consistent and ardent Christian, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Harmony Church in the Oakbowery Circuit, of which the writer was pastor for three years. He was chairman of the board of stewards for his church and a leader in all the activities of the church, as well as the community. In conversation he expressed many times his love for and his unconquerable faith in Jesus Christ. Our hearts are sad at his going away, but Heaven is made brighter for us because another of earth's friends are waiting for us over there, to the loved ones left behind. Dear wife, husband is standing at the golden portal waiting and watching for you and each child to come home to the happy reunion where death and sorrow will not mar the happy association in that land where the Lamb is the light.
May God's richest blessings be yours.
