John Amos Gray was the son of Daniel B. Gray and Elizabeth Wilson, and the great-grandson of Daniel Gray, a Revolutionary War veteran.

John enlisted in the 59th Indiana Infantry, Co. D during the Civil War, and was wounded at the battle of Vicksburg.

He married his first wife, Hannah M. Davis on 19 Sep 1866 in Owen County, IN. They had two children: Daniel B. Gray (named after his grandfather) and Ida May Gray. Hannah died in 1885.

He married his second wife, Mary Ann Coffee on 08 Mar 1893 in Litchfield, Montgomery County, IL. They had three children: Hazel Fern Gray (1895), John Amos Gray Jr. (1897) and Thomas Ross Gray (1900).

Before and after the war, John worked as a farmer; in the 1890s and 1900s, he was a travelling salesman (according to his daughter Hazel and to the 1900 census). John met Mary Anne Coffee, who was a widow with a 12-year-old daughter, Ethel Ellen Matthews. They married in Litchfield, but shortly thereafter, moved to Venice, Madison County, IL where they ran a boarding house and restaurant, feeding the workers at the steelmill.

Because of exposure during his civil war service, John suffered from rheumatism, chills, fevers, and diahrea (according to his civil war pension records) and was not always able to work.

During a visit to his married daughter by his first wife, Ida May Gray Dakin in 1911 in Clark County, IN, John suffered a heart attack and died in an old soldier's home. He was buried in Owen County, Indiana, next to his first wife, Hannah Davis.
