Add PhotosThe Hart's Lane Burying Ground was laid out as a potter's field by the City of Philadelphia around the year 1857 following the closure of the city public burial ground at the Vineyeard, and was bounded by Lehigh Avenue, 20th Street, Hart's Lane, and 22nd Street. In 1859, the City Greenhouse (used for the deposit of unknown or unclaimed bodies) was moved here prior to the construction of the City Morgue in 1870.
In this City Cemetery were buried many soldiers who died in 1863 and 1864 in the U.S. Hospitals at 16th and Filbert Streets and Broad and Cherry Streets during the Civil War. On April 18th, 1865, following its removal from its old site at Cherry Hill in Fairmount, the City of Philadelphia opened the Philadelphia Hospital for Contagious Diseases at 22nd Street and Lehigh Avenue immediately adjacent to this burial ground, and in this potter's field the hospital also buried its dead.
Following the passage of an ordinance in 1889, a crematorium was erected on the ground. When Sedgley Avenue and 20th Streets were opened through a portion of the grounds in 1908-9, burials in the right-of-way were disinterred and cremated on site.
When a new Hospital for Contagious Diseases was opened at 2nd and Luzerne Streets on June 1st, 1909, hospital burials and the city potter's field began at the new location.
Today, the old burial ground site is an empty lot partially occupied by a warehouse.
